Eric began by tossing to Fox News correspondent John Roberts, who
reported live from a Donald Trump rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Trump
made news by heartily endorsing Republican Speaker of the House Paul
Ryan. "Paul Ryan has a Republican primary coming up next week," Roberts
said, "and Donald Trump was hedging his bets about endorsing him. There
was a firestorm this week over reports that Trump was not endorsing
Ryan, so Republican leaders and close advisors leaned on him." Roberts
went on to describe the scene in Green Bay. "This is typical for one of
Donald Trump's convention center appearances. There are a few thousand
people, a good crowd here in Wisconsin, and they are cheering loudly."
Fox News analyst Juan Williams marveled that Donald Trump again went
out of his way to insult his fellow Republicans earlier in the week.
"This is so interesting because this race in Wisconsin is not even
close, Paul Ryan is leading by more than 15 points. So this was a
finger in the eye from Donald Trump to Paul Ryan, it's Trump versus the
Republican establishment and it's a sign of a Republican fracture." But
Republican strategist Lisa Boothe insisted that Trump may finally be
trying to mend fences with GOP leaders. "Donald Trump has had a tough
couple of weeks, and this is a reset. Endorsing Paul Ryan is a positive
step for his campaign."
Eric then cut live to the Trump rally as the candidate began speaking.
"We need unity, we have to win this election," he told the crowd. "This
is truly one of the most important elections, certainly in my lifetime.
If we lose it, we are in the wrong direction and maybe it's all gone.
This campaign is about America, it's time for a real change!" Trump
served up a heaping helping of red meat to the conservative crowd,
touching on terrorism, the Second Amendment, and enhanced
interrogation. He also complained about what he sees as a hostile press
corps, and of course he took a few digs at the woman he calls 'Crooked
Hillary.' Returning time and again to the theme of Republican unity,
Trump reaffirmed, "We will be the big tent party, and as a unified
party we will lead our country to unity as well." Offering an olive
branch to his fellow Republicans, Trump praised and heartily endorsed
Paul Ryan, as well as Senators John McCain of Arizona and Kelly Ayotte
of New Hampshire.
